The authors have reviewed a series of 257 patients with typhoid fever, who were proved to be culture-positive and admitted to Han-Yang University Hospital from May 1972 to August 1976. The results obtained were as following:
1. There was no significant sexual difference in frequency. The peak age of incidence was in the third and fourth decades, being 61.5% of total patients. The seasonal prevalance was predominant summer (61.5%).
2. Of 257 patients, the majority (94.5%) were admitted within three weeks from the onset of symptoms.. The average duration of hospitalization was 9. 1 days and 120 patients (51.0%) discharged between the second and third ´ week after admission.
3. The clinical manifastations were fever(99.8
relative bradycardia(88.3%), chill(81.7%), headache (68.5%), abdominal fullness (65.4%), general malaise (61.9%), abdominal pain (51.4%)
and hepatomegaly (39.3%) in that order of frequency.
4. Widal reaction. was positive in 126 patients (62.4°%) of 202 and 28 patients of 44 who were
negative on initial examination showed increasing titer.
5. The results of culture for S. typhi revealed positive in 205 patients (79.8%) in blood, 38 patients (14.8%) in stool and 3 patients (1. 1%) in urine. The positive culture for S. typhi both in blood and stool was 10 patients (3.9%) and both in blood´and urine 1 patient (0.4%).
6. Sensitivity of S. typhi to various antibiotics from January 1975 to August 1976 were compared with that ´observed from May : 1972 to December 1974.
Ampicillin, penicillin, streptomycin, carbenicillin, cephalosporin were showed, effectiveness of S. typhi..in, variably throughout years. , S. typhi became more sensitive to chloramphenicol from 1975 compared with previous years.
